The Library of Congress added 25 titles to the National Recording Registry, including Glen Campbellâs âWichita Lineman,â Eddy Arnoldâs âMake the World Go Awayâ and Whitney Houstonâs âI Will Always Love You,â which was penned by Dolly Parton.
The 25 titles were chosen based on their âculturally, historically or aesthetically significantâ importance. This yearâs additions bring the Registryâs total to 550 titles.
Glenâs recording of âWichita Lineman,â which was written by Jimmy Webb, spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard country chart in 1968.
ââWichita Linemanâ is the ultimate expression of the musical and spiritual bond between my husband Glen and his songwriting soulmate Jimmy Webb,â said Kim Campbell, Glenâs widow. âDespite âWichita Linemanâ being such an important song for Glen, it was also one of his favorites and I know heâd be so thrilled and honored to have his original recording preserved in the Library of Congress.â
âIâm humbled and, at the same time for Glen, I am extremely proud,â said Jimmy Webb. âI wish there was some way I could reach him to say, âGlen, you know theyâre doing this. They are putting our music in a mountainâit will be preserved for all time.'â
Eddy Arnoldâs âMake the World Go Away,â which was penned by Hank Cochran, reached No. 1 on the Billboard country chart in 1965.
